US Marine Corps considers smartphones for marines

“This is a request for information (RFI) surrounding commercially available or emerging trusted handheld platforms (i.e., smartphones, tablets, etc.)… The purpose of this RFI is for the Marine Corps to learn more about this emerging technology.”

The Marines, therefore, want to look at tablets and smartphones that can run “innovative” guest operating systems which would allow them to rapidly secure any communications. “The ideal solution provides a high-assurance commercially-available framework that the DoD can build upon to meet military specific requirements”.

Earlier this year, the US Army announced moves towards issuing smartphone-enhanced body armour, which would network him or her constantly with headquarters, providing constantly updated battlefield maps and information.
